Essential Equipment for your Boat – An ICOM Transponder

How often do you hear of fishing boats and pleasure craft being lost in rough seas without adequate signaling equipment? Larger vessels often cannot see the smaller ones – that too often stray into shipping channels. If you are in trouble on the water, how easy will it be to find you? Your safety is paramount.

What is a transponder and why you should have one on your boat?
An AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponder automatically keeps you visible to larger commercial and passenger ships that are required to carry a Class A AIS transponder. Your position is known to these vessels and you will know where they are – even if you cannot see them. AIS signals may reach where other radar cannot.

Why buy the MA-500TR Class B AIS transponder?
The Class B transponder is designed for pleasure craft, workboats and small vessels. While your position is being transmitted automatically, it will also receive dual AIS channels simultaneously and update information from both Class A and Class B vessels. It is an affordable cost-effective entry level option into chart-plotting providing valuable information for the keen boatie.

Simple Operation for collision-risk management and safety:
With a marine radar like display, a Target List display and a Danger List display that shows a list of vessels within 6 nautical miles, the MA-500TR is simple and will alert the user to potential problems by emitting a beep sound. When connected to a compatible radio, DSC calls are easily made and safety-related messages from other transponders are received.
